Every now and then we
get a call for an unusual job. In this case, the
request was to design a wheelchair friendly garden.
The homeowner suffered from a debilitating condition
which left her wheelchair bound most of the time.
Though she could walk on her own, it was only in a
limited fashion and kneeling or bending was out of the
question. The main objective was to build a garden
which was entirely accessible by wheelchair.
What was desired was
a large garden area complete with an evergreen
centerpiece and surrounded by perennials and annual
color. We
designed a circular theme and poured used tinted
concrete to form a circular garden path which also
accessed the front entry and the driveway.
The circular design allows access to all of
the garden's features and intersections are
built wide to allow for turnarounds.
The numerous potted plants offer chair-level
access so that a level of
"hands-on" gardening can still be enjoyed by
the homeowner. The bedding plants and
other more traditional garden plants are
tended to by other family members. |
