| For
this project, the homeowners wished for a two-level
planting area, a small patio somewhere down by the
trees on the right side, a walk to access their
driveway, (beyond the fence at the top, which we
have displayed on another page on this site), and a
set of stairs to access both areas.
What we came up
with was quite dramatic. We built two tiers of
informal natural stone walls, a flagstone patio and
a stairway of precast concrete steps divided by a
flagstone landing. The plant material consists of a
wide variety of perennials, evergreens and deciduous
shrubs and trees.

The
result gives this plain backyard an almost tropical
feel. Lots of foliage and color change throughout the
year and the patio creates a feeling of intimacy and
privacy - almost as if it were an outdoor den.
Over twenty tons of
stone was used to create the two-level planting areas
and another five to six tons of irregular bluestone and
precast concrete products were used to create the patio,
walk and steps.
We finished the job with a little over two hundred fifty
individual plants, with a heavy emphasis on perennials. |

Above
is a small water feature we dreamed up as we
were building this project. The
homeowner expressed an interest in a small
water feature, but not a pond or a waterfall
per se. So, we
came up with what is basically a fountain
which we surrounded in stone and decorated
with a simple vertical spray. The
faeries were the homeowner's idea, and they
are the perfect complement to this enchanted
garden!
At
left, is a view of the walk we built to
connect all of this to the front of the
house. Loaded with perennials, it is a
year-long source of color and texture. The
fountain can be seen just to the left of the
walk to the right of the red azalea. |
