This pergola and privacy screen is the perfect destination for this otherwise understated backyard.   Set on a mortared flagstone patio (which we also installed), it provides an elegant and shady retreat on a hot sunny day.  Elegant Tuscan columns support a simple trelliage made of  two pairs of 2" x 10" lintels supporting a series of architecturally lighter 2" x 8" purlins.  Clear cedar lattice rests in a lightweight framework to create privacy screening which offers the feeling of a full enclosure, but was installed to allow access from many sides.
The rear screening panel was built slightly taller than the surrounding panels to create a focal point as well as to serve as a stronger visual anchor for the structure.  The round shape of the potted plants in the foreground perfectly complement the circular  shape of the oculus in the rear and also serves to draw the eye to the center.
One of the interesting features of this pergola is the oculus we built into the rear lattice screen. It lends a  "Queen Anne" touch to this structure and it becomes a focal point for the entire yard.
This detail was fabricated on-site from segmented pieces of hand-cut clear cedar which were glued together and shaped into a nearly two and one-half foot diameter circle.  This was then fitted to accept the lattice as well as the trim boards and finished to appear as if the entire section was one uniform piece. Details such as this are what help to create a truly unique and "one-of-a-kind" structure.

This entire project serves as both a poolside sitting area as well as an extension of the pool house (rear) as well as the home itself.  The flagstone patio (which is made of the same stone that surrounds the pool) ties this summer oasis to the pool and they serve to complement each other in defining a beautiful and functional space for outdoor relaxation.
