This project started out with an overgrown garden, a slope and a gorgeous view of Port Jefferson harbor.

We created three separate levels starting with the lawn then stepping up to the main patio.  A retaining wall built from Colonial Wall Stone establishes the third level which overlooks the new landscape, the patio, the pergola and the harbor beyond.
We added a pair of stairways accessing the upper level from each of two lower patios  which resulted in a very efficient traffic flow  The multi-level / multi-surfaced nature of this project allowed us to create a variety of planting areas, sitting areas and other interesting features giving this landscape a very dynamic feel with lots of movement.

The paver patio was built using Nicolock® tumbled pavers which have a very old and weathered look.  Their rounded edges create a very distinct definition between the individual pavers and draw attention to the pattern and shape of the walk and patio.
These pavers blend nicely with the natural Colonial Wallstone of the retaining walls and natural Bluestone for the stair treads and stepping stones in the lawn area.
The colors used are very traditional and blend beautifully with the landscape to create a feeling of age and permanence.

The pergola, which we installed as the main feature of the patio area,  was designed to complement the historic nature of the main house which was built in the 1860's and was of course finished in traditional white opaque stain.

This little sitting area
is one of the most attractive elements in this landscape.  It was designed exclusively for this simple table and "Ice cream parlor" chairs.  It sits atop the highest level of this design and has a view of the entire yard as well as the harbor below,  It's basically just a "bulge" in a walk which serves to connect the two stairways, but it became a rather charming focal point all by itself.

The finished job just a little over one year later.  The plantings have begun to mature, the moss has found its way into the brickwork and to the casual observer, it seems as if this landscape has been in place for years. This casual design ties in nicely with the property which features a home which was actually built in the late 1800's.  The overall feel is traditional and "lived in", which is just what we were looking for.
