This double-tiered retaining wall was built with a product called  Techo-Bloc®  and the style of the stone is called Creta® .

Typical of a Segmental Retaining Wall, it all starts with a proper footing of graded aggregate which is compacted firm and level.  A geotextile fabric is placed beneath the aggregate base and behind the wall which is then fitted with a drain line to channel out excess water and the entire wall is backfilled with gravel.
The images below show the basic steps involved in this process.

These walls serve the dual purpose of both holding back a significant part of this hillside as well as acting to break up the view and make it more interesting.  Natural curving lines allow it to blend seamlessly with the landscape.  The planting areas it creates offer an opportunity for the use of plant material which might otherwise have been difficult to use because of severe slopes.

Properly constructed, a segmental retaining wall will last a lifetime.
And with a wide variety of colors and styles to choose from, all that's needed is a little imagination to create something which is both beautiful and functional.
