We
were contacted by this homeowner to design a large
patio and a retaining wall for their backyard. (See
our
'Stonework' page for details)
During the design stage, it was obvious that the
patio needed something to break up its size (over
1,000 sq. ft. in area) and we decided to introduce a
water feature.
The natural difference in elevation between the
patio level and the rest of the backyard gave us the
height from which to work and the design just flowed
from there.
The look we were after was to have a waterfall seem
as if it "broke through" the retaining wall and
ended as a small pond that became part of the patio.
What we came up with was a multi-level cascade that
creates an interesting water feature which adds
interest to what would have been just a very large
patio. |

The
presence of the waterfall contrasts very
nicely with the formality of the stairs and
along with them serves to connect the upper
level with the lower. The plant
material along with the sound of splashing
water adds a natural touch to what might
otherwise seem a rather stark environment of
pavers and wall block and when the plants
begin to mature, the entire water feature
will become more anchored |

Here is the pond a year later. The
plants have begun to mature and spread and the water plants have
established themselves as well. The cascade has become
somewhat hidden by the foliage which gives it a very lush and
tropical look and the sound of the falling water creates a very
tranquil and peaceful setting.
