A pergola always adds a touch of elegance to a landscape.

There are as many ways to build them as there are yards to put them in.  Some are elaborately crafted with fretwork, scrollwork and lattice.  Others are sleek and contemporary, while still others, such as the one shown here, borrow a little from both styles.

This pergola, which was part of a large landscape project we designed and built, is constructed of Douglas Fir with posts made from Western Red cedar.  All of what you see here was crafted on-site.  The trim, moldings, support brackets as well as the rafters and purlins were all carefully cut from pieces of raw dimensional lumber.
All horizontal joints are sealed to keep water out, the support beams are through-bolted to the posts and the entire structure is anchored to concrete footings which we installed before we built the patio.
Everything was then covered with three coats of opaque white stain.

In the landscape, a pergola offers a quiet and private place to be alone, entertain friends or just spend time with your family.  It's a perfect retreat where you can shake off the stresses of the day and just sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery.   The photo above was taken one year after we installed this landscape and now that it's had a chance to "grow in", the overall setting is quite dramatic and very inviting.
